Ed Warren is a Healthcare Consultant with CENTRE Health Partners. He has been involved in third party reimbursement since 1980. Ed earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration in Accounting at the University of Georgia and has since worked with a variety of not for profit and for profit facilities in all areas of the US. He has provided reimbursement assistance to various healthcare providers including hospitals ranging from small critical access hospitals to large tertiary teaching facilities.
He began his professional career in 1980 as a field auditor with a fiscal intermediary before providing reimbursement accounting and consulting services with an international accounting firm in St. Louis, Missouri. Since 1982, Ed has prepared or reviewed approximately 20-30 Medicare cost reports each year. In 1987, he joined HCA Management Company which later became Quorum Health Group. While working in the Southeast Region office in Atlanta, Ed worked with hospitals in several states providing cost report preparation, reimbursement accounting, and strategic reimbursement planning. As Quorum phased out their cost report preparation for managed clients, he taught several cost report preparation classes for hospital personnel.
In 1994, Ed moved to the Quorum corporate headquarters in Brentwood to lead the reimbursement department for owned hospitals. He presided over the growth from 11 to 21 hospitals developing third party accounting systems and additional revenue opportunities with specialty units. In addition to supervising the reimbursement staff, he also had responsibility for coding, case management, and managed care contracting. Also, for a short time, Ed was in a dual role of AVP for reimbursement and a regional CFO for seven hospitals.
Since leaving Quorum in 2001, Ed has been providing reimbursement consulting services to various not for profit and for profit hospitals. He has been preparing and reviewing cost reports, has worked with stand alone hospitals and small chains as their reimbursement department providing all areas of assistance, and assisted on several due diligence projects evaluating the reimbursement opportunities and exposures for potential acquisitions.
Ed’s strength is in hospital reimbursement analysis and development of strategies to increase revenues for hospitals by having extensive knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid regulations. He has had many successes in this regard throughout the United States.
Strategic initiatives have always played an important role in Ed’s reimbursement consulting services. He has evaluated and developed financial pro formas for new and established services such as home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, distinct part psych and rehab units, and wound care services.
Ed has been a guest lecturer in a number of seminars speaking on a variety of third party reimbursement topics.
